What is sport premium?
In September 2013, additional grant funding was introduced to improve the quality and breadth of PE and school sport.
‘The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend that all children and young people should take part in moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity for at least 60 minutes every day. Schools have a key role to play in achieving this aim. This is particularly true of primary schools where the foundations of positive and enjoyable participation in regular physical activity are embedded. All children should have equal access to high-quality PE provision and opportunities to experience and participate in a wide range of sports and physical activities. Schools should use the PE and sport premium funding to help achieve these aims.‘ Department for Education
Using the funding
Schools should prioritise PE and sport premium spending to improve in the following 5 key areas:
- increasing all staff’s confidence, knowledge and skills in teaching PE and sport
- increasing engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity and sport
- raising the profile of PE and sport across the school, to support whole school improvement
- offer a broader and more equal experience of a range of sports and physical activities to all pupils
- increase participation in competitive sport
Our offer
P.E. and school sport play are an important aspect of school life at Reeth and Gunnerside. Our location in the Yorkshire Dales provides fantastic opportunities for outdoor adventure and we try to make the most of these. In 2020, our strategy and ideas were recognised through the Primary PE and Sport Premium Awards – we won both the regional and county awards for innovation. We know that the experiences we offer are valued by pupils and parents.
‘My child has made super progress during her time at Reeth school. I’m delighted by the school’s holistic approach to education.’ Parent feedback
‘Beyond the classroom, leaders have a clear and extensive plan for broadening the experience of pupils. A wide range of after-school clubs are available. Fell running and mountain biking are very popular clubs.’ Ofsted, 2023
