Physical Development – Challenge – Sportsmanship
Key stage 1
Pupils develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils are taught to:
- master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key stage 2
Pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils are taught to:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
Swimming and water safety
We provide swimming lessons from Year 1 upwards to ensure that pupils can swim 25m
These lessons take place at a local swimming pool, during 6 week blocks across two terms.
In order to provide our children with a rich, broad and balanced physical education experience and to fulfil the requirements of the outdoor adventurous activity curriculum our children also take part in:
- Regular ‘Forest Schools’ with a fully trained member of staff
- A biennial residential to an outdoor centre in Y3/4 and Y5/6.
- Sessions at our local Outdoor Education Centre (Marrick Priory) in KS1
- An annual school walk
Using our sport funding to access the skills of a dedicated teacher we have raised the standard of PE and sport in our schools, which is also providing our staff with a great opportunity to share practice.
We have bought a fleet of 9 mountain bikes, providing an exciting opportunity for our older children to take part in a cycling club after school which takes them out into the local environment.
Children can also join a healthy range of sports clubs which change on a regular basis as well as having the opportunity to represent the school in a wide variety of area sporting competitions.
Cluster sporting events are well-organised by an external professional body (Simon Carson Sports School) which ensures that the calendar of events feeds directly into regional level 2 sporting events.
We use the physical education curriculum progression grid (link below) to support planning and assessment of this subject.
