PSHE                                                            Responsible - Respectful - Relationships

At Reeth and Gunnerside Schools we want to provide all our children with the qualities and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. We aim to enable children to be reflective, resilient and responsible members of their local, national and global communities. In particular, with our schools being based so far away from urban areas, we seek to ensure our curriculum is tailored around the specific needs of our children, creating a school community that sets inclusiveness, the wider world and equality at the heart of everything we do.

Our PSHE curriculum covers all of the age related content from the national curriculum and equips pupils to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives. It encourages them to:

  • be enterprising in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic wellbeing.
  • reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future.
  • build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem, and to identify and manage risk, make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions.
  • recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings.

'Developing an understanding of themselves, empathy and the ability to work with others will help pupils to form and maintain good relationships, develop the essential skills for future employability and better enjoy and manage their lives.'

PSHE Association

Our Citizenship education helps to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society, fostering an awareness and understanding of democracy, government and how laws are made and upheld. It should also prepare pupils to take their place in society as responsible citizens, manage their money well and make sound financial decisions.

We have carefully planned our PSHE curriculum to ensure it is sequential and structured, building in developmental progression by revisiting themes in each year group so learning is age appropriate and continually enhances prior learning.

We follow guidance from the NYCC PSHE curriculum entitlement framework whereby the children learn life skills through the key themes of:

Keeping Myself Safe      My Healthy Lifestyle      Me and My Relationships      Me and My Future      Becoming an Active Citizen

Relationships and sex education (SRE) is delivered sensitively and inclusively, as an integrated part of our developmental PSHE programme. Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education (SMSC) and Mental Health and Wellbeing also form integral parts of our PSHE programme.
